As a local small business we are happy to help wherever we can.
We grew up in Midsomer Norton and have always worked and made our home in the local area.
Jim had 15 years experience working for local authorities and private grounds maintenance firms, maintaining Primary and Secondary school grounds, starting as a labourer and progressing to Charge Hand after 7 years. His experience includes all aspects of sports pitch maintenance, general border maintenance, grass care and small tree works. In-house training was obtained whilst working for the local authority on all aspects of groundsmanship and gardening.
Kit's background in banking and area sales management, experience in the Estimating Department of a grounds maintenance firm and a passion for gardening has brought business knowledge and gardening together.
March 2000 - J&K Primrose Garden Maintenance was formed in 2000 and grew steadily for the first 5 years.
In 2006 we took the decision to take on our first member of staff - Kit's Dad, Pete. His wealth of gardening experience and an extra pair of hands meant we could increase our customer base to include larger contracts, without neglecting our smaller customers, many of whom had been with us from the start.
In spite of difficult times during 2009 through hard work and the continued support of our regular customers J & K Primrose Garden Maintenance expanded on the staff front and have taken on our second full-time member of staff, Dave, who has 10 years gardening experience working for a local hotel.
March 2010 - J & K Primrose Garden Maintenance have now been trading for 10 years!
August 2011 - J & K Primrose Garden Maintenance have continued to increase business despite the current recession due in the main to hard work, loyal customers and the retention and expansion of many annual contracts.
May 2012 - J & K Primrose Garden Maintenance have changed the status of their business from a partnership to a limited company - we are now PRIMROSE GARDEN MAINTENANCE LIMITED,
T/A J & K PRIMROSE GARDEN MAINTENANCE registered office 7 Withies Park, Midsomer Norton, Radstock, BA3 2NU, United Kingdom registered number 8033299 Once again we've expanded and Ben has joined the team.
October 2013 - Moved to larger premises, long overdue and now everything is in the proper place, it's wonderful.
February 2014 - We are looking forward to the coming season and building our relationships with both existing and new clients - exciting times ahead!
February 2015 - Once again looking forward to the coming season, working with existing and new clients, some of which we've already met. Kit (me) is trying to embrace social media and is working on a Facebook page as a way of contacting new clients.
April 2016 - Busy season already - we have increased our staff to 9 in the last 12 or so months! We now have some help for the administration side of things in the form of a wonderful lady called Sam. Our eldest son George helps out wherever possible around studying a business course at Bath College, Chris joined the team at the start of last season from a sports ground maintenance firm and is proving to be an excellent team member, and we are hoping to take on our first apprentice very shortly. Our youngest (Wilf) has also shown an interest in becoming a tree surgeon which is fantastic, he just needs to finish primary school etc and go on to 'tree school' first. (watch this space in about 15 years!)
July 2016 With George working for us this Summer during his break from College we've just realised he is the third generation Primrose to cut grass on some of our school sites!
January 2017 George has been working for us full time since September 2016 and is relishing the challenge - he's already taken and passed his trailer test - he's studying for his pesticides licence at the moment and would like to take his chainsaw certificates next!
We've taken on our first ever 'apprentice' and Joe is due to start in February.
Dad (Pete) would like to retire as he will be 70 in March, however he's still taking a huge interest in the kit, so we may be able to persuade him to stay and take on some of the vehicle and machinery maintenance and cover holidays and sickness!
February 2017 - We now have a rough cut machine so can tackle rough grass and rougher areas than we could before - 3 of us are trained up for using all ready and more will follow.
George has passed his City and Guilds Level 2 award in the safe application of pesticides using pedestrian hand held equipment so we now have two people who are trained and competent to spray herbicides or pesticides. We have also invested in new pedestrian mowing machines which will tackle larger areas alongside our existing ride on equipment.
March 2017 - Jasmine has joined the ever expanding team. Order books filling up fast again this year - more staff required!
December 2018 - Oh my goodness what a year, and how fast did 2018 go?!! Lots of changes on the staffing front. Pete has finally officially retired! Dave also retired this Christmas after 9 years of working for us. Joe successfully completed his apprenticeship and we were pleased to offer him a full time permanent role within the company. Despite our best efforts we were unable to find the right person to join us this summer so we are going to consolidate the core team, develop their skills fully and then look again. Of course if you would like to join our hardworking team then you can contact us via email at anytime.
January 2019 - Our reliably fantastic 2019 team currently consists of
Jim, Kit, Mark, George, and not forgetting Sam who is in the office 2 days a week for us. Here's hoping for another successful year.
March 2020 - Our 20th year in business! No year is ever the same when you run a business and this year is proving more challenging than others with COVID - 19 at the heart of all our decisions. Our main aim is, with the full support of our wonderful team and customers, to keep all our staff and their families safe, our customers safe and 'do what we can when we can' this year.
December 2021 - What a year! Many ups and downs with staff juggling even more 'hats' than usual. We would like to thank our customers for their wonderful support during this time. Also a big thank you to all our staff, who have made it through so far without catching the virus! Roll on 2022 season!
January 2024 - Just realised I've not updated the web site for a while! Whilst the strict restrictions of Covid are over I do think it's taken until now for a lot of us to propely recover and regroup - you don't really realise the extras we were all doing during the pandemic and the added pressure it took on your brain band width until the extra hats we all took on were gradually removed. The pandemic has certainly changed my outlook - our motto of 'do what we can, when we can' has stuck and despite the cost of living pressures, I try not to 'sweat the small stuff' so much.
I think we can say that 2023 was a wet year, a warm year, but wet! As I write there is a lot of ground under water or at the very least the ground is water saturated - here's hoping for a period of dry and settled weather.
February 2024 - pleased to announce all staff have requalified as Emergency First Aid in the Workplace providers.
